my Christmas/New Year vacation plans

In Japan Christmas is a holiday for friends to get together, while the New Year is a family holiday, when people go to shrines and temples. In the US Christmas is a family holiday, when many people go to church even if they only go twice a year, and families get together for a Christmas dinner and exchange presents. In my family we usually have a Japanese New Year's Day but an American Christmas.

This year, though, I'll be in Japan for Christmas, but in the US for New Years'. I'll have an American Christmas, with a Christmas cake and our annual lamb family dinner, in Japan, but I won't be able to have a Japanese New Year's in the States. I'll be getting ready for the American Historical Association's annual conference, trying to get over jet lag and see a few friends (and do some research in the UCLA Research Library).



Anyway, that's why I won't be there for the next class on January 8th. I am looking forward to reading your reactions to "Faust" (or "Much Ado about Nothing" if the Faust video doesn't play correctly) here on the blog, though. I'll be checking in every once in a while to see how you are doing. Don't forget to post about what you are doing during the break, and don't forget your writing assignments. I forgot to mention that we won't have class on the 15th because of the Center Test that weekend, but I'll see you all on the 22nd for sure.

Vacation Plan

This winter vacation, I'm going to take part in a year-end party of seikyo.
Many people who have somethig to do with seikyo will attend and many entertainments are going to be put on. I'm looking forward to it!!

Also, I'm going to go home and meet my friends. I can have relaxing time there.

However, I have a lot of homework (^^;) Probably, I can't relax enough (^^;)

my vacation plan

I want to do something in this vacation,but this vacation is only two weeks,so I can not do everythings.So I want to do two things in this vacation.

One thing is going to Tokyou and see friends of high school and carmming school.Some friends of carmming school is still in carmming school and study hard,so I want to buy lucky charms and give its to them.

The other thing is winter sport.I bought a snowboard last Wedenesday,so I want to go Ajigasawa and snowboard.I'm in a snowcountry, I want to enjoy winter sport.

Vacation plan

My vacation plan is to spend time on a hobby. Even though it's a long vacation, it isn't done in particular. So time is spent on a hobby.

It has become cold, so street basketball is resting. I'm listening to many songs at a house instead of it. Later is practice of a dance.

There isn't a girl friend, either and a local friend returns to localness and doesn't come and it would be leisure every day every day.

I worked out two main plans for this vacation.That plans will carry out when I return home.

First, I'm going to meet my friends and seniors are high school club members.They are important to me and I like them very much! Probably, we will eat out, chat, and so on.

On the other hand, I'm going to take a trip with my family for 4 days. This trip will be the nicest my family have ever taken.
We have taken a trip a few times so far and there were a little trouble then. My brothers, sometimes I, often quarreled with each other at the tourist spots because we were too young to enjoy taking a trip.
Now, I think, we grower up than several years ago and have good sense.Therefore, I expect that this trip will give us some very happy memories later on.

I'm looking forward to executing my plans. I want to return home as soon as I can.

vacation plans

This winter, I am planning to have a party with my old friends on the evening of Christmas Day. We are going to cook sukiyaki and have a chat over dinner. After dinner, we are going to exchange gifts each other and enjoy playing bingo. At the end of the party, we are going to have a Christmas cake and sing a song. I wish that we will have a wonderful time.

Also, on New Year's Day, I and my family will visit grandparents's house. My cousin's family will come there, too. And we will have excellent dinner such as sushi, turkey, etc. After that, children will get otoshidama(New Year's gift) from adults and they will become happy. I'm looking forward to seeing my grandparents and my cousins.

By the way, have you already seen PUBLIC ENEMIES(the movie starring Johnny Depp)? I'm planning to go to the movie during winter vacation.

I looked for a blog of the artist in which I take my interest.The artist in which I take my interest is dj oasis. When a drug is used in the past, and sees, he's a bad person.

But wonderfully, the interest to his society comes to the song for which society was criticized by the interest wonderfully. Such he's gentle, doesn't kill each other like a gangster and is the person who makes the human relations important conversely. I respect such him.

Ms. Kon who hears black music may be fascinating. It's a by-talk, but because it's discrimination terminology, black music isn't a good word so much. But I think it isn't minded to use it only between the Japanese. It's because we respect black music.

For this week's assignment I'd like everyone to find a website in English that interests them, and introduce us to the rest of us. I have some English websites listed by the side of the blog, under "Links" but I think you should be able to find others that interest you. Let me introduce the sites that I thought were important enough to link to this blog.

Google News can keep you abreast of the major news stories around the world. I check it first thing almost every morning to keep up with what's happening almost everywhere. You can customize it to report whatever you find interesting.

Japan Today is a news and information website. It's a little bit tabloidy at times, but it does cover the important news about Japan in English. If you're interested in news about Japan in English I would recommend both it and the Japan Times, which is also a newspaper. It's major stories are carried both in the online and print editions.

Brad Blackstone is a friend who used to teach English at Minnesota State University in Akita. Now he teaches at the National University of Singapore. He's much better than I am at both blogging and teaching English, and he uses blogs a lot in his classes. I hope you enjoy his blog.

Another blog for English classes that I happened along one day is the ALEA blog. It calls itself "A meeting point for all the students and staff who are, or have been, studying or teaching English at Yethreb School, Ben Ashur, Tripoli, Libya." It may be interesting for you to read what other students are doing in the way of learning English as a second language.

I also have links to the TOEFL and TOEIC sites for those of you who may be interested in taking either of those tests. TOEIC tests only passive skills, but is used by many businesses in Japan for appointment and promotion purposes. There is a TOEIC preparation class in this school. I also try to prepare my students for TOEFL if I can, and in fact your in-class writing exercises are intended to be preparation for TOEFL's Test of Written English (TWE) section.

Finally, I linked the class blog I created for a more advanced English class. This was originally Level 4, but we keep changing the system. I don't know if we'll be able to continue the advanced, intensive English classes much longer.

my favorite movies

As I explained in class, I didn't want to post to the blog about movies until I knew what kind of films you liked. Now I don't know what to say because you have some very diverse tastes in film. Well, so do I.

My favorite director of all time is definitely Akira Kurosawa, who directed Ran, The Seven Samurai and many other classic films. He was a big influence on such famous Hollywood directors as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. He and John Ford were also fans of each other. If you haven't seen any of his films I hope you will watch some. It's not widely known, but he was also an editor, and edited his own films. He originally trained to be a painter, and thus his mise en scène is very well composed.

My favorite Hollywood director is (or was until he died recently) Robert Altman. Altman was famous for directing films in which the characters didn't read formal lines, but had to improvise a lot of the dialogue. Many famous actors looked forward to working with him for the freedom his style gave them, and I think it would have been a nightmare to write subtitles for his films because the conversations are always moving in and out of microphone range. His most famous film is probably MASH (which was made into a TV show) but his film 3 Women is ranked higher at the Internet Movie Database. That's kind of a quirky, director's indulgence film, but its being higher rated only highlights his being, like Kurosawa, a film-maker's film-maker.

Altman had a love affair with American music, which I share, and made many films in which great music is important, for example Nashville (country music), Kansas City (Jazz), and A Prairie Home Companion (Folk). In The Long Goodbye the title song, written especially for the film, is played over and over again in a variety of musical genres, from Jazz to Folk to Mexican Mariachi music.

Both those directors are dead, and while I like old movies (if they are good), especially classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, I also like more recent films. I enjoy the films of the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, very much, especially O Brother, Where Art Thou? (which also has great music). It's based on Homer's Odyssey, which it sets in Depression Era Mississippi. I also like Roman Polanski's films (no Polanski jokes please - I know he's in the news a lot these days) such as Chinatown, Frantic, and Rosemary's Baby. I think his version of Shakespeare's Macbeth is the best ever filmed.

I do promise we'll watch a film in this class, but I don't know what film it will be. There's no obvious choice that would appeal to everyone in the class together. Do any of you have suggestions?

Movies

I like science fiction movies. Especially, I like "Harry Potter".

It is very famous movies, so all of you know this movies probably.

There are seven series from "the Philosopher's Stone" to "the Deathly Hallows", but what I have watched perfectly is "the Philosopher's Stone ", "the Chamber of Secrets " and "the Prisoner of Azkaban ".

My favorite one is "the Prisoner of Azkaban ". This movie has a scene that Harry and Hermione go back into past time and save their friends from death penalty. It's exciting and impressing for me, so I like this scene.

Do you have any scene you can feel excited or impressed in "Harry Potter" ?

My favorite movies

I especially like action movies. For example, 007 series, Jason Bourne series, etc.

First, with regard to 007 series, I like GOLDENEYE and DIE ANOTHER DAY. And I like Pierce Brosnan the best of successive James Bond.

Next, regarding Jason Bourne series, Jason Bourne is a fomer CIA agent and Matt Damon act the part of Jason Bourne. I think that Jason Bourne is very attractive because he is so cool and strong.

Actually, I also like suspense movies. For example, PRIMAL FEAR, HANNIBAL series, etc.

PRIMAL FEAR is a court drama starring Richard Gere. The highlight of the movie is Edward Norton's acting. Edward Norton act the part of a man with a double character and his acting is marvelous anyway. I think that it is worth seeing the film for once.

HNNIBAL series are phychological thriller films based on the novels written by Thomas Harris. Anthony Hopkins gave an excellent performance as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and received Academy Awards in 1991.

Movie

I'm afraid that I don't care too much for the action movie including violent scene.
But I don't hate it. I like SF action movie toward comedy.
For instance, MEN IN BLACK and Back to the future.

The story of the former is that argents are energenic to watch alien. In this movie, many star-studded cast acted. Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smisth, and so on.In the second series,played by Micheal Jackson as Argent M.

In the later movie's main character are an unusual expert and a general high school student. He went to the past and saw his parents were young.

Autumn

In my image, the autumn is like the spring. The reason why I think so is difficult to explaon. Infact, I don't know the reason clearly. One of the reason may be likeness of both season's wehter. Both season is proper temperature to live for me. So I like the spring ,but I don't like the autumn. Indeed, there are many delicious fruit such as apresimmon and a pear in the autumn, and colored leaves are beutiful. I don't like coldness,and the autumn's next season is the wintera,so I have to live to be frightened in the autumn when the cold winter comes.

When saying autumn, it's a fruit, isn't it? I like an orange very much. A book is being read and a netsurfing is being done while eating an orange.

I did that, and also spent autumn of this year.

A book read a novel called "fake". It was the novel about which it lie in a lie and was a very deep book.

A book called" history in an American slum" is being read now. I'm interested in old society, so when having a fascinating book, please inform me about old society.

Apples

Talking of autumnal fruits, we find persimmons, grapes, pears, apples and so on. I like apples the best of all autumnal fruits because apples have some advantages as compared with the other fruit. First, apples are beneficial to your health. As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Second, you can use apples all kinds of food. For example, put a slice of an apple into a salad, grate and put a piece of an apple into a curry and so on. Third, you can process apples such as apple butter, hard cider, cider, apple cider vinegar etc. Therefore I think that an apple is not only delicious fruit but also useful one. Do you agree with me? Autumn have a lot of appeal. It is said that the autumun, when people have a good appetite, the best season for reading or sport, and so on in Japan.

Autumn (fall)

Autumn, or fall, is an interesting season. As with Spring, the weather is changing, but in fall it is getting cooler, not warmer. The days are getting shorter, not longer, and in fact they are now shorter than the nights. Much of the world is now going to sleep for the winter, and things in general slow down. Everyone is getting ready for winter.

One of the nicest things about Autumn is the fall leaves. There are only a few areas of the world where the climate and the soil are such that leaves in general turn bright colors, especially yellow, orange and red. One is the Tohoku region of Japan, where acid soils and temperate climate combine to produce these fall colors. Another is the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, where similar climates and soil also produce similar effects with the leaves. Pennsylvania attracts many tourists with the largest such forests in easy reach of people from other parts of the country, but New England, with especially poor soils and rugged countryside, is even more famous for its leaves. Canada is so proud of its fall leaves that they have made the red maple leaf a national symbol and even put it on their flag.



Autumn is also the season of the harvest. Food is abundant and harvest festivals and thanksgiving holidays are common. Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November, while the Japanese holiday of Labor Thanksgiving Day is also in late November. Fresh fruit is abundant, and there is plenty of other food available, too. While most people prefer Spring or Summer, there are many good points to Fall as well, and many people enjoy this season like any other.

I miss the cider we used to get in Pennsylvania in the Fall, sold in gallon jugs. It would turn hard in a few days, and you had to drink it before it went bad. The flavor was really good.

I thought a lot about what I wanted to post here for my own free topic. I finally decided on a musician I like a lot, but you probably haven't heard of. I heard of him through the international media and on the Internet, but I couldn't get his music until buying music on the Internet became possible. He's just not that popular in Japan - at least yet. My daughter, who likes J-Pop, thinks he's just too weird.

"Dad, that music is so weird!" She told me.

"Hey, I love Jazz and I love Bluegrass. How could I not love this?" I responded.

Béla Fleck plays music that is an intricate mix of Bluegrass and Jazz, both very indigenous American musical genres that combine African and European instruments and traditions. Music sites like iTunes don't know what genre to put him in, and sometimes his different albums are in different categories. Needless to say, he doesn't get much air play. He's too country for the Jazz stations, but too jazzy for the Country stations. But I do run into other people who like his music.

Japan has both Jazz and Bluegrass musicians. In fact, even before I met my wife and thought of moving here, I had an album of Japanese Bluegrass music that I used to play for friends. And of course everyone who knows anything about Jazz has at least heard of Sadao Watanabe, probably the most famous Japanese Jazz musician ever.

I will introduce my hometown Nakadomari!

There are some famous tourist spots.

This is one of the famous tourist spots which is called "Nanatsudaki."

Some tourists come here every year and drink its water. I have drunk the water before.
It is very fresh and cool. Some of them put some water into a bottle and bring back.

This is famous for its beautiful sea. Many peolpe go swimming and go camping in summer.

Also, beach soccer tournament is held here every year. Many people take part in it.

My hometown, Misawa

I'm from Misawa City in Aomori Prefecture.

It is located the Pacific of Japan in Aomori.

We can see many models of plane and thre are displays, facilitiies, and so on.

The Hotoke swamp was registered the Ramsar Convention in 2006, this is picture of bard, "oosekka".

This is "Ogawara lake". It is the eleventh largest lake in Japan.

There are camping facilities, I can recommend that families go there.

Some other place in Misawa have joyful facilities and beautifl nature.

Moreover, a lot of events hold every year. For instance, the flying festival and Halloween festival. Many people can take part in these events.

I want to show you two things about Tokyo.

First thing is the Tokyo Tower.
This picture is the Tokyo Tower.This tower is 333 meters in hight.We can climb up this tower on stairs.This tower is illuminated very well, so this plase is popular for a date spot.

Second thing is a bronze statue of Hatikou.
This place is known as place where people meet with.

I think this place is not good for waiting people,so many people use this place for waiting people that we take a trouble to meet wiht people.

gawara is quite famous area in Aomori. When I say on the map, it's in the location like the top.

The station is such feeling. It's the very small station compared with Hirosaki, but everyone is gentle and the station employee is kind. There is a shopping area where I'm degrading around the station. It was very conspicuous before, but a shopping area was just obsolete by establishment in a supermarket.

But there is also something which doesn't change from the past. That's a traditional entertainment in an area and local specialties. Local specialties are introduced this time. There is a lot of one which used apple mainly, but local specialties are also doing pottery making as the one which dried and dried rice cake as rice cake and "tugaru kaneyamayaki". " The tugaru kaneyamayaki" is very beautiful, and there is elegance very much. I have wine, jam and juice in local specialties of apple. My grandfather is growing apple and is making juice and jam. The depth different from an over-the-counter one and the sweetness can be tasted. I think the place where I play is a place good for a little but elegant person in the country.

My home town,Kuroishi

Various traditional events and festivals are held during the season in my hometown Kuroishi.

The cherry blossom festival is held in spring and many street stalls are opend there.We enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms with eating and drinking.

In summer,Neputa festival which one of traditional events take pleace.There are from 60 to 70 Neputas parade the street at night and entertain spectaors from children t0 adult.

Also,the autumn colors are beautiful.Many people visit Nakano maple hill which famous for maple viewing.It is illuminated at night anda the view is getting still more beautiful.

We have a sale which is called Makkoichi in February.All sorts of goods are sold at a bargain price in addition people who buy a thing on the day can get a free gift.

Thus there are many enjoyable entertainment in my hometown,how about coming to Kuroishi for once?

My hometown, Grand Rapids, Michigan

I don't know if you know it or not, but both Professor Carpenter and I were born in Michigan in the United States. I was born in Grand Rapids, a small town in the southwest of the state. I moved away when I was young, before I started school in fact, and I've lived a lot of places (they say Americans are always on the go), Los Angeles mostly, but my birth is still registered in the Kent County Courthouse in Grand Rapids.



Grand Rapids is a very religious town. In fact, Wikipedia has a whole category about religion in Grand Rapids, rather than just a single page about it. When I was born my father taught at Aquinas College, a Catholic college in town run by the Dominicans, one of the three great intellectual orders of the Catholic Church.



Of course Grand Rapids is very modern now, and has changed a lot since I was born there, but there is still a lot of traditional Americana there.

Turning fall, we can saw red leaves when we go outside. I like fall season very much.Of course, they said that some people feel sentiment(? or sad?) in fall, I feel it, too, but we can have a good time to eat tasty food in fall.

There are many fall's vegetables and fruits at super market. Especially, my favorite food is pampkins. I ate a Halloween lunch with my friend at Hirosaki university's restaurant today! We were very pleased because we could ate two slices of punpkin and a cup of punpkin's soup. And I want to cook with my friends by using punpkins until this year.

I'd like to suggest that "Why do we belive Character Judgement by blood group?" or "Why do we have some stereotypes about blood group?" Character Judgement by blood group is very popular among young people in Japan, however, people in a different country are not very interested in blood group. Surely, it is impossible to judge the character of the individual by blood group because there are only 4 types in blood group. Then why Character Judgement by blood group is so popular in Japan? In my view, the guess of Character Judgement by blood group is almost right. I was hearing the music born from a black people and so-called "black music" from a junior high school. I also like "hiphop" very much at the inside. Little, the person who hears is criticized with "noisy" in Japan.
" I think as noisy?? you got served lol". It's wrong to have just listened to certain music and estimate the whole. Originally, hiphop was used as a message for social criticism. Since it was now, it became little. But the song which still included a message in society isn't little and exists.
But a minority (hiphop) tends to be slighted absolutely because something as a mass psychology acts on Japanese.
Everyone matches up, and Japanese hears "pop music". Everyone also supports that a television and a newspaper. There is a good song, but "pop music" is that to hear only that and criticize other musical culture would be a problem for certain.

I already know about Dr.Faustus and the auther, Christpher Marlowe. And I wanted to watch this movie, I was very happy.

Dr.Faustus is tragedy and famous works of Marlowe. The theme is sin of Dr.Faustus. He contracted with devil,Mephistopheles, gave his soul and got a power for 24years. After 24 years, he was torn from limb to limb and his soul carried to hell. It was too late.

The movie was are in mysterias atmosphere. It makes the movie terrible. I thought Dr. Faustus is clever man but abnormal.

Mouse dissection

Every Monday I have a lesson: Kiso seminar. In this lesson I belong to the immune system laboratory, and a teacher (his name is Osanai, and his specialty is parasitic worms) let me make various experiments.
The most impressive experience in this lesson was mause dissection. After killing a mause, I observed the lungs, the liver, and the gallbladder.
It was a very meaningful eperience. And it was also shocking for me.

Japanese culture!!

Many people live in Japan often long for foreign culture. However I love Japanese culture!! I especially love Japanese culture of the past. For example, Japanese people of long ago feel the changes of the seasons delicately and express their feeling by composing a poem. I am moved by the sensitivity that they had. Contemporary Japanese people don’t have so much sensitivity. You may think that it is because Japanese people of long ago have more time than contemporary Japanese people. You might be right, but I think you can’t feel and express your feeling like them if you have so much time. I think they were more sensitive to their language than now we are. I think we have to learn from their way to live. If we do so, we can live our life more richly.

In the movie, Jedi knight,who save the garaxy, fight with Sith. Sith try people to Darkside.
From episode 1 to 3, the hero is Anakin Skywalker. He was a member of Jedi knight but he fell darkside because of Sith. And from episode 4 to 6, the hero is Luke Skywalker, Anakin's son. In the end, Luke fought Sith!
