The thalidomide scandal

I'm sorry about to delay submitting homework.

Today, medicines help us in various cases. We can't imagine the daily lives that there are no them. They are very useful. However, They are often harmful. These facts are important and very interesting for me majoring in chemistry. "The thalidomide scandal" is the one of damage from medicines. I want to tell about influence of chemical substances against human bodies through the example.

First of all, I have to explain "The thalidomide scandal". In 1957, thalidomide was made as a sedative drug by a German company. It was used as a excellent medicine because it had little side effects. It was also made use of to inhibit morning sickness. However, nobody knew it has teratogenic effects. As a result, many children was born with deformities such as phocomelia.

Next, this is the structural formula of thalidomide. It cause terarogenicity, however, in fact, all of them always don't cause teratogenicity because of optical isomer. Optical isomer is that molecular configurations are same. But their relations are like between right hand and left hand. Such a few difference causes terarogenicity. Those two molecular can be divided by new technology now.

Finally, medicines can make people happy or unhappy. If we use it correctly, it is very useful. For example, thalidomide is very useful for leprosy and cancer patients. I think not only people who manufacture medicines but also others should be careful about them.
