I am sorry to be late.
Beijing The Japan women's 4x100-meter relay team will run in two meets this weekend in Europe in an attempt to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, the Japan Association of Athletic Federations has announced.
The team of Tomoko Ishida, Sakie Nobuoka, Chisato Fukushima and Momoko Takahashi, along with alternate Mayumi Watanabe, are entered in the Primo Nebiolo Memorial meet in Turin, Italy, on Friday, then will compete in Kaunas, Lithuania, on Sunday.
The quartet set a national record of 43.67 seconds at the pre-Olympic meet in Beijing late last month to improve its rank to 17th in the world--just .03 seconds behind Australia for the 16th and final qualifying spot.
The top 16 teams, based on the average of their two best results recorded between Jan. 1, 2007, and July 18 this year, qualify for Beijing.
Japan's other relay teams appear safely through. According to the latest rankings released May 25, the men's 4x100 team is fourth, while in the 4x400 event, the men are 10th and the women 12th.
