Runaway Jury

I couldn't understand outline of the film, Runaway Jury last time. But I somehow understood who was key and who did something wrong. One of the factors that makes me feel confused is the jury system. I think the jury system is different from that of Japan in some points. I want to know how a jury is selected or how a sentence is given.

Jury pools are selected from voter rolls first. Then there is questioning of the potential jurors to determine if they have any bias. Lawyers are allowed to issue preemptory challenges. Finally the jury is seated with alternates who serve in event of a juror dying or being disqualified before a verdict can be rendered.
